Ski Travel: Nub's Nob
The best snow in the Midwest is to be found at Nub's Nob ski resort, which is in Michigan. This resort has the reputation of being a great place for families, so if you are looking for a family friendly ski travel spot this is definitely one to consider. The resort is in fact proud of the number of families whose children have experienced their first ski run ever on their slopes. The layout here is reasonably simple. The vertical drop is 427 feet and the elevation is 1,338 feet, and there are 43 trails. There are 8 chair lifts and the resort boasts one of the US' best skiing and snowboarding schools. Private and group ski lessons are both available, and you can even learn for free if you are new to skiing! There is also the Nub's Cubs Childcare Center so you can leave your kids to have fun and be looked after while you enjoy the slopes.
The fact that this place is great for beginners and families does not mean that there are no slopes which offer a challenge to the intermediate or experienced skier. There is in fact quite a lot of variation in the terrain around here, so you will be able to find a slope to suit you whatever your level of expertise. Night skiing is also worth trying at Nub's Nob. If you are an experienced skier you might like to do racing training at the ski school, and there are league races hosted at the resort which you could even sign up for. During the season there are many such race events on offer.
There is a general store at the ski lodge, where you can buy warm clothing including gloves, neck warmers and hats, and there is also a technology center where you can have equipment repaired or tuned.
When you're hungry, there is Nub's Nob Cafeteria, which is open for breakfast and lunch. It also has a 'brown bag' room, where you can go to sit and eat your own packed lunch. If the weather is good you can also enjoy grilled burgers at Nub's Winter Garden, or you could enjoy soup and a sandwich at Warming Pintail Peak Hut at the top of the Black Lift, whilst admiring the incredible views to be had from there.
Nub's Nob is definitely a great spot for family ski travel, but it is also great for the experienced skier, especially one who enjoys racing and skill events. There is a huge variety of activities to choose from here, but plan your trip over a weekend because that's when it all happens, and you don't want to miss out on your favorite events.
