Ski Travel: Alaska
Some of the word's best and most popular ski destinations are to be found in Alaska. One of the best ski resorts is the Alyeska Resort, which is situated in a region which experiences an annual snowfall averaging 631 inches. The regions is at its highest point 2,751 feet above sea level and has a 2,501 foot vertical drop. The slopes here are equal to the finest anywhere in the world, and the bonus is that you won't find yourself getting bored waiting in long queues waiting for the lifts, or being irritated by badly crowded slopes here. There are 9 lifts (including 6 chair lifts and 2 surface lifts) and a cable car, and altogether there are a total of 68 trails. Most of these trails are suited to skiers of intermediate ability, however there are some for experts and beginners as well, so that everyone in the family can enjoy their ski travel vacation.
An extra attraction here is that you are allowed to ski at night, which is an incredible experience, especially with the northern lights on show, and the hanging glaciers and snow topped mountains all around you. If you haven't tried night skiing before, this is a really thrilling experience and something well worth a try. This resort is ranked by Skiing magazine at number 9 in the top 25 ski sites in the world. Daylight hours here in April are USA's longest at 16 hours, although in December there are only 7 hours of daylight (which means night time skiing is important if you want to get your skiing hours in!) The ski season here starts in mid November and goes through to April.
For luxurious accommodation at the resort there's the Alyeska Prince Hotel, which has fine dining and elegant rooms, plus nightly entertainment. There are other evening entertainment spots around here too.
Amongst other outdoor activities to be enjoyed in this area are the Glacier Tubing Park, which is great family entertainment, particularly if you enjoy snowboarding. Other activities in the area include dog sledding, ocean cruising, mountaineering, heliskiing, back country skiing, ice climbing and polar bear viewing.
Ski travel to Alaska, a state of white, breathtaking yet mysterious beauty, is the best winter vacation to be found anywhere, with entertainment to suit everyone, and truly exhilarating scenery and skiing. After a blissfully tiring day on the slopes you can be pampered to your heart's content in the evening. Here there is so much to do to keep you and the family happy, so as the song says: 'North to Alaska', whether you go on your own, with a companion, or with your family, there's something for everyone here!
